Momentum Explained
Linear momentum p = mv is a vector quantity measuring the "quantity of motion". It is conserved in all isolated systems — this is one of the most powerful principles in physics.
- Units: kg·m/s (equivalent to N·s)
- Newton's 2nd Law (vector form): F = dp/dt
- Elastic collision: Both momentum AND kinetic energy are conserved
- Inelastic collision: Momentum is conserved; KE is NOT
- Impulse: J = Δp = FΔt — the change in momentum equals force × time
